Communication
1-on-1
The 1:1 Meeting
1:1 meetings are short meetings between you and each of your team members. It serves as an opportunity to check in with the team member and discuss any personal issues or requests they may have. They should be however long as you think would take to discuss all the important discussion material, plus a few minutes for buffer. In the past, 10-15 minutes long meetings have worked for initial introduction meetings.
Some topics you may discuss are:
- “Temp check”
- How are they feeling?
- How has the work been going? How has the difficulty been? Quantity?
- Are their assigned tasks for the project going well?
- Do they need any resources to support their work?
- Private concerns
- Is the team member underperforming? This is a good opportunity to raise the issue.
- Does the team member have concerns about other members of the team?
- Career development
- What is the team member interested in professionally? How can CodeLab better support that?
- Goal setting
- Ask the team member what their goals are by the end of the term: related to CodeLab, professional development, academic, social, or personal. Write these down, and check in with them about the goals in future 1:1 meetings!
In general, get to know your team! Your interactions in whatever organization you’re in don’t have to be strictly professional. Be friendly with each other, as it helps people be more willing to speak up and ask for help, and it turns this cohort experience into a social opportunity as well.
